Lara Jones spoke with Brad Asay of the Utah AFL-CIO, AFT Utah.
Utah AFL-CIO advocates to improve the lives of working men and women in Utah. It is one of nearly 500 state and local labor councils of the AFL-CIO. They are the heart of the labor movement. We are democratically elected bodies dedicated to represent the interests of working people at the state and local level. We mobilize our members and community partners to advocate for social and economic justice and we strive daily to vanquish oppression and make our communities better for all people—regardless of race, color, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, or ethnic or national origin.
AFT Utah and AFSCME 1004 form a powerful union alliance to be the voice of public employees at the bargaining table, the Utah Legislature, and in our communities. Union stewards take care of the needs of employees at the worksite with AFSCME executive officers and AFT Utah bringing in state and national union resources to assist union members as they organize and assist their colleagues at the worksite.
Jessica Stauffer and Talmage Nelson, Utah Health Workers United (UHWU), a unit of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 7765.
UHWU: "We are an organization whose purpose is to unite ALL workers at University of Utah Health in order to address our shared interests as workers such as compensation and working conditions. Individual workers have little power in large healthcare systems. This negatively impacts our health, finances, and well-being. It also detracts from the outcomes we want for our patients! Ultimately, we believe that advocating for healthcare workers is advocating for patients. We invite you to join us to transform healthcare practice in our beautiful state."
Connor Estes spoke with Ivy Smith and Christina Ordonez of Salt Lake City Public Library Workers United, which is still working with AFSCME to have their union recognized. According to union organizers, workers seek to address longstanding issues at the library such as safety, exclusion of staff in the decision-making process, lack of transparency, wages that fall below the national average, inaccessible and expensive healthcare, and more.
