RadioACTive's Nick Burns talks with author Jeremy Dauber, whose latest book is American Scary, A History of Horror from Salem to Stephen King and Beyond (Algonquin Books | Hachette: Oct 1, 2024). Dauber is a professor of Jewish literature and American studies at Columbia University. More recently he is the author of Mel Brooks: Disobedient Jew and American Comics: A History.
What's it all about? "While Dauber delves into the way horror has evolved over four American centuries, he also reveals startling throughlines between the colonial era and the present, showing how many of our fears have held constant. As AMERICAN SCARY ties these works into their historical context, sifting through changing attitudes – and anxieties – about race, religion, class, gender, and much more along the way – the real horror story of AMERICAN SCARY is that history is as terrifying as fiction, if not more so."
