April 15: Day 1 of Stories From the Other Side, a collaboration between rising journalists from the University of Utah, graduates of The Other Side Academy (TOSA), Amplify Utah, and KRCL's RadioACTive.
The Mansion Metaphor. Team Cool Girls and Zach—student journalists Sofia Kelson, Nathalia Montoya, and Zach Robinson—dive into the stories of women at TOSA, headquartered in Armstrong Mansion on the northwest corner of 700 East and 100 South in Salt Lake City. Currently, TOSA is home to 126 people, yet only 13 are women. This story focuses on their stories and how living in the mansion is a metaphor for overcoming addiction, incarceration, and homelessness.
Donuts Galore. University of Utah journalism students Isaac Dunaway and Thatcher Patterson share their experience visiting the kitchen of The Other Side Donuts, with help from The Other Side Village's Robbie Myrick. They spoke with residents and employees Moe, Gideon, Lee, and Nicholas about the difficulties of their pasts, building a new life, and opening a donut shop. And it's the new life that comes first.
