USANA's Michelle Benedict stops by with an update on this year's USANA Kids Eat Holiday Bag Project. With donations from the public, it provides food for food-insecure kids from Ogden to Payson each weekend (when kids are not in school but don’t know where their next meal will come from). The problem is that schools’ two-week break for the holidays in December means Utah kids (and we’re talking 1 in 10) are left to figure out food for themselves. 

  • USANA Kids Eat Holiday Bag Project provides two weeks’ worth of food for the kids for the holidays. "We provide the bags, you provide the food, pack the pantry bag, and deliver them to the school! This is both a service and a donation all in one, and it’s a fantastic way to support hungry kids in Utah through holiday school closures."

    To participate:

Alexis Black Mountain of Restoring Ancestral Winds, a Utah nonprofit educating Indigenous communities on issues around stalking, domestic, sexual, family and dating violence.

  • Nov. 26: Shí Dóó Shímá: A Navajo Tea Party. A Conversation on Safety, 10a-12p on Zoom. "November is Native American Heritage Month: Join us for 'Colonialism, Thanksgiving, and the Direct Influence on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence in Native Communities;' an eye-opening presentation that delves into the lasting impact of colonialism on Native communities today. This session will explore the intersection of colonial history and contemporary issues, including the epidemic of sexual assault and domestic violence in Indigenous communities. By examining how European settler-colonialism disrupted Indigenous cultures, family structures, and traditional ways of life, we will better understand the roots of current struggles faced by Native women and children. Additionally, the presentation will reflect on how colonial narratives, particularly surrounding Thanksgiving, have been used to diminish the painful realities of Native peoples and their ongoing trauma."

TenAce Moser of Queer And Sober SLC, an event series for queer people who are sober/in recovery and their allies.

  • Dec. 1: , 11A-5P at Publik Space, 975 S. West Temple, SLC. "Join us for the gayest holiday market of the season! Holi-Gay is back for its second year to provide a market full of LGBTQIA+ artists and small businesses for your holiday shopping needs. With 30+ local makers, there's sure to be something for everyone on your list. This market is hosted by Summer of FalkenCraft and Q of Crochet by Q, two members of the queer community. Each vendor carries the label of being LGBTQIA+ and your support of the market directly helps build a stronger community for everyone involved. Community: We will be gathering donations for Weber Fridge (hand warmers, new beanies, new gloves, shelf-stable food, hygiene items) and Queer Youth Art Night (monetary donations)."

  • Dec. 7: Santa's Twerk Shop, 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Fit To Recover, 1335 S. Major St., SLC. "Ready to Twerk your way into the holi-gays? At this event you will find drag, food truck, free cotton candy, a Leather Santa for photo ops, and a white elephant gift exchange. Please bring a gift under $20 to participate in the gift exchange, it is encouraged to bring more than one gift if you can, to donate to another patron who isn’t financially able to purchase a gift to participate. Queer And Sober SLC is empowered by Project Rainbow."
