Protect Our Future — Say No to Uranium rally Friday @ the UT Capitol Building, Ogden's Local Artisan Collective celebrates another year around the sun, and SLCC film students host annual casting call.

Carmen Valdez of HEAL Utah on uranium mining an invitation to join the White Mesa Ute community at a rally on Friday. For 25 years, HEAL Utah has been at the forefront of environmental advocacy, policy change, and community engagement. 

  • Oct. 4: White Mesa Rally: Protect Our Future — Say No to Uranium, 12:00 p.m. at Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State St., SLC. "White Mesa Ute community members will rally at the Utah State Capitol to protect their health, environment, and cultural heritage from Energy Fuels Resources’ White Mesa Uranium Mill. White Mesa community members will express their opposition to the mill's operation as an international dumping ground for radioactive waste and as the destination for uranium ore mined near the Grand Canyon. The rally is sponsored by the White Mesa Concerned Community and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. Members of the public and those who wish to learn more are invited to attend!"

  • Oct. 12: White Mesa Ute Community Spiritual Walk & Protest, 11:00 a.m. at the White Mesa Community Center, Blanding, Utah. The rally starts at 11:00 a.m., followed by the spiritual and protest walk to the White Mesa uranium mill. 

    From Emily Arntsen at KZMU in Moab, Canyonlands confirms fungus that causes deadly disease in bats. White-nose syndrome has killed millions of bats in North America since it was discovered in 2007. Now, Utah has become the 44th state in the U.S. to test positive for the fungus.

    • PUBLIC HEALTH NOTICE: Rabid Bat Found in Pioneer Park. "Late Tuesday, October 1, the Utah Public Health Lab notified Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD) that a bat found in Pioneer Park on Friday, September 27, had tested positive for rabies. If you touched or were touched by a bat, call 385-468-4222 (option 4) immediately to be evaluated for rabies preventive medication. If you are experiencing homelessness and touched or were touched by a bat, you may also visit Fourth Street Clinic (409 W. 400 S.) or a hospital emergency department; be sure to tell them about your contact with a bat. Treatment with rabies immunoglobulin after exposure is extremely effective when given in time (before symptoms appear)." For more details, click here

    The Local Artisan Collective in Ogden celebrates its birthday this month. The collective features local artisans creating handcrafted items for sale & offering various art classes and events. RadioACTive gets a preview of the free community party they're planning. 

    SLCC Film Production Department will hold an open audition call to cast the 40+ short films and commercials student filmmakers will be shooting over the current semester. RadioACTive learns more from Prof. David Lehleitner and student filmmaker Tara Dutton. 

    • SLCC Filmmaker Casting Call, 12:00-7:00 p.m. at SLCC South City Campus Sound Stage, 1575 S.  State St., SLC. This is an open-call audition for the 40+ shorts and commercials that will be shot throughout the semester. Roughly 100+ roles are being cast — all ages and ethnicities are welcome.
