Tim Peterson, Cultural Landscapes Director at Grand Canyon Trust. Earlier today tribal leaders & advocates presented new poll findings that show Utah voters strongly support Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.
Public opinion research firm New Bridge Strategy recently completed a survey of 500 registered voters across Utah to assess voter views on national monuments and protecting public lands.
The survey found that 75% of Utah voters support presidents’ ability to protect public lands as national monuments and nearly two-thirds (65%) of voters support keeping the number and current size of existing national monuments. This support is strong across political parties.
71% of Utah voters support continuing to keep Bears Ears as a National Monument, including 94% of Democrats, 80% of Independents, and 61% of Republicans.
74% support continuing to keep Grand Staircase-Escalante as a National Monument, including 96% of Democrats, 80% of Independents, and 65% of Republicans.
89% of Utah voters agree it is important for Native American tribes to have a strong role in managing their ancestral lands and 4 in 5 voters say the next administration should keep the agreement with tribes regarding how Bears Ears is managed in place.
Utah Snow Survey's Jordy Clayton talks about snowpack and water levels as we experience one of the driest winters in recent memory. A program of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Utah’s Snow Survey Program Team works to provide mountain snowpack data and streamflow forecasts from across the state. This information can be a valuable tool for conservation planning, water supply management, flood control, drought and avalanche prediction, climate modeling, and recreation.
Music Meets Activism with Dulce Maria Horn of Mayan Languages Preservation. Horn is a community activist and organizer who works primarily with immigrant rights. Her journey as an activist began at the tender age of two when her father took her to her first anti-war protest. She graduated cum laude class of 2023 from Whittier College (Los Angeles, CA) with a Bachelor of Arts in Global and Cultural Studies and Spanish, with a minor in Political Science, and a thesis on Bad Bunny's El Apagón. Listen as Horn shares her path from a youth leader and voter empowerment organizer with Comunidades Unidas to her current work helping to preserve, revitalize and digitize 29 Mayan languages — and a playlist to match.
