Westminster's Dr. Tamara Stevenson on moving beyond a 'zero-sum' approach to DEI. Plus, Psychedelics in the Beehive is back to talk plant medicines, poetry and parties.

Dr. Tamara N. Stevenson on the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Salt Lake Tribune recently published her op-ed: Voices: In 2025, Utah can thrive by moving beyond a zero-sum approach to diversity, equity and inclusion.

All are welcome to join Westminster University in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This special celebration is part of the University's sesquicentennial:

  • Monday, January 20: MLK Day Observance (University closed)

  • Thursday, January 23: Community Time On-Campus Rally and March (Noon - 1:15 PM)

  • Friday, January 31: Unity Luncheon (Registration required)

  • Friday, January 31: MLK Day of Service (Westminster campus only)

  • Thursday, February 13: B.W. Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture (Keynote with Dr. Carolyn Finney) (Registration required). As the keynote for Westminster’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Celebration Week, Dr. Carolyn Finney brings a compelling blend of academic insight and real-world advocacy as a storyteller, author, and cultural geographer to this capstone event. Her work champions environmental justice by amplifying diverse voices and perspectives and fostering inclusive policies and practices.

  • Wednesday, February 19: Panel Discussion/Film Screening: “Origin” (5:30 PM Panel; 6:30 PM Film Screening) (Registration required). Attendance is free. Visit our MLK Celebration web page for more details and to register for this year’s roster of events.

Organizers of Psychedelics in the Beehive return to flesh out the 3-day festival they say will transform downtown. Joining us:

  • Sara Urquhart, organizer-owner of Psychedelics in the Beehive and co-founder of the Divine Assembly (the mushroom church) 

  • Andy Silva, community builder, event organizer, and creative force behind Revival—a dynamic platform focused on fostering connections, personal growth, and transformative experiences. Through initiatives like the Revival a Creative Living Festival and Psychedelics in the Beehive (an event dedicated to reshaping perspectives on psychedelics), Andy brings people together across Utah’s vibrant communities. 

  • Wynter Storm, CEO & executive director of Utah Black Artist Collective (UBLAC). A poet since the age of eight, Wynter made her debut in the 2018-19 Salt Lake City Slam Poetry Season and made the team in the same year. She creates poems about justice, healing, self-love, queerness, and the power to overcome. She is the 2018 Ogden Pride Poetry Slam winner. And a member of the 2019 Salt Lake City Slam team where she went on to be a 2019 Salt Lake City Pride Finalist, a Rustbelt Team finalist, and a Southwest Shootout team finalist. 

  • David Brooks, local DJ Geovante. Long-time Salt Lake organizer and innovator, David has founded dozens of organizations and businesses that have become staples to the culture and growth of the city.
