IRC-SLC Invites you to Light One Candle, Donate Warm Clothing to Needy

RadioACTive digs into the nonprofit and its programs to help recently arrived refugee families and individuals. Red Cross UT checks in, and an excerpt from a recent Amendment A panel discussion.

Red Cross of Utah issues "Giving Challenge" to raise $1 million for Hurricane Helene relief by the weekend. Michael Smauldon of the American Red Cross of Northern Utah and Southwest Wyoming explains.

Jesse Sheets of the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City, a nonprofit that provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in Utah. 

  • Warm Welcome Winter Clothing Drive in Salt Lake City. Winter clothing donations will be accepted at he IRC office (221 S. 400 W., SLC) between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Accepting the following items in clean, new, or like-new condition. 

    • HIGH NEED: Adult coats and jackets 
    • HIGH NEED: Winter boots (all sizes for adults & children)
    • HIGH NEED: Waterproof Gloves
    • Warm socks (new only)
    • Scarves & hats
    • Snow pants (all sizes)
    • Reusable bags (i.e., IKEA blue bags)

  • Become a Light One Candle sponsor. IRC-SLC's annual holiday gift drive offers community members the unique opportunity to fulfill holiday wish lists for recently arrived refugee families and individuals, supporting their efforts to gain control of their future and become an integral part of our community. To sponsor a refugee family during Light One Candle, follow these steps:

    • Read through the Light One Candle FAQ and decide the number of individuals you or your group would like to sponsor.
    • Submit your Light One Candle Sponsorship Form. By filling out this form, you are confirming your commitment and availability as a sponsor. Your request will be received by our development team who will work to match you with a refugee family or individual(s) by November 26th.* Once matched, you will be sent a wish list for each individual or family. Cultural background information and family demographics will be included with the wish lists.
    • Purchase or gather new items to fulfill a portion of the wish list, or you can choose to fulfill the entire wish list.
    • Deliver wish list items, unwrapped, to the IRC in Salt Lake City office. Due to the IRC's responsibility to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of the people we serve, we are unable to support direct deliveries to families. 
    • Donation receipts will be provided to all in-kind donors by the end of January 2024.
    • Please note that due to increased interest in supporting the work of the IRC in Salt Lake City, some sponsors who sign up after November 15th may be placed on a waitlist to be paired with a family. Sponsors who are on a waitlist will be notified by November 26th.

What's on Your Ballot? Amendment A: Income Tax + Education, a panel discussion recorded September 18, 2024, at the Hinckley Institute of Politics. The panel was presented in partnership with Better Utah Institute and the Utah Taxpayers Association.
