One of the many stories about KRCL's ground-breaking program Concerning Gays and Lesbians. Plus the late, great Donna Land Maldonado and her impact on Listeners' Community Radio of Utah.

Tonight's show features some of KRCL's history as we celebrate 45 amazing years of serving the community with music discovery and community connection.  We held a big birthday bash last month, including a history panel with some of the folks who were in the room when 90.9fm went live.

Volunteer DJ Becky Moss, producer/host of the radio program “Concerning Gays & Lesbians” from November 1981 to August 2003. During the History Panel, Moss shared the story of finding her voice when it was not commonplace to be out and proud, especially on the radio.

BONUS: Volunteer DJ Braidan Weeks and clips from his interview with former GM Donna Land Maldonado on the origins of Living the Circle of Life (originally broadcast Dec. 3, 2019). While she passed in 2022, Donna left an indelible mark on Listeners' Community Radio that is still feel t around the station.

  • A pioneer of community radio, Donna was one of the first people hired by KRCL founder Stephen Holbrook in July 1979 before the station had even signed on the air. Originally, she was brought in by Holbrook to create a show amplifying the voices of Native Americans. She rose through the ranks, eventually serving as Program Director before becoming General Manager in 1998, a role she held until her retirement in 2009. Listeners may remember hearing her on Wednesdays as host of Le Cafe Folk or filling in on Sunday’s Living the Circle of Life show.

And a special shoutout to KRCL Volunteer Sue Gerber, who also shared her stories of Donna on the show tonight.
