Tuesday, Dec. 16: Roundtable Tuesday digs into hunger as a policy with folks from Crossroads Urban Center and Utahns Against Hunger. They'll share plans for the next legislative session and ways you can help. RadioACTive Dispatches Correspondent brings us an immigrant story ... from Latvia. Plus, Crossroads' Christmas Food Giveaway, and Ducks and Clucks has joined the ICE watch.
Meet TJ of Ducks and Clucks, a community group that rescues ducks and watches for ICE.
In case of a wildlife emergency, TJ recommends Wild Life Salt Lake.
Dec. 23: Christmas Food Giveaway | 10A-1P @ Rowland Hall School, 843 S Lincoln St, SLC. Ryan Hoglund of Rowland Hall School says preparations are underway for this year's event.
Event by Crossroads Urban Center: "Every year, Crossroads helps families enjoy the holidays by giving away turkeys and other food needed to prepare a meal. If you need help with food this season, come and receive a turkey and sides. Drive north on Lincoln Street, and a volunteer will load a turkey and sides into your trunk. Limit 1 turkey and a bag of sides per vehicle. Walk-up options available. First-come, first-served until supplies are exhausted. Info: 801-364-7765 or email erika@crossroadsurbancenter.org."
According to Utahns Against Hunger, approximately 54% of us say the cost of groceries is a major source of stress. As we saw with the federal shutdown earlier this year, more Utahns worry about the source of their next meal. Had SNAP benefits been stopped due to Congressional inaction, nearly 1 in 8 million people — including 16 million children and 8 million people with disabilities — would go without the food assistance they need.
RadioACTive's Roundtable Tuesday explores hunger as a policy choice with Neil Rickard, Child Nutrition Advocate with Utahns Against Hunger, and Bill Tibbitts, Deputy Executive Director/FACE Hunger and Homelessness Director at Crossroads Urban Center. Count on both of these organizations to be active on Utah's Capitol Hill when the Utah Legislature meets in General Session starting Jan. 20.
Jan. 15: Rally for Housing and Services to End Homelessness | 11 AM in the Rotunda, Utah State Capitol Building, 350 N State St, SLC. Event by Crossroads Urban Center and Powerful Moms Who Care: "Help FACE Hunger and Homelessness remind legislators that only housing & supportive services can end homelessness. If Utah wants to have any chance of ending homelessness for families with children, youth, seniors and people with disabilities before the 2034 Olympic Games, we need to begin investing in real solutions to homelessness now."
RadioACTive Host Emeritus Tamrika Khvtisiashvili joins via Zoom to share a story about immigrants. "While living in Latvia, I witnessed the unfolding of language policies predicated by the spread of nationalistic trends, largely fuelled by the war in Ukraine and U.S. decoupling with NATO," she says. "It explores how Latvia’s history of Soviet occupation, current language policies, and fears of Russian aggression have made language a deeply charged marker of identity, power, and belonging — revealing the moral dilemma of protecting a national language without denying minority communities the right to speak their own."
