RadioACTive checks in with family, friends, and religious and elected leaders. Plus, Roots Race and Culture hosts Lonzo Liggins and Danor Gerald, Utah's own James Brown of Living and Aging with Pride, and Ogden poet Wynter Storm Morning with another take on Juneteenth.
RadioACTive's Lara Jones attended the SLC No Kings rally on Saturday and says the more than 10,000 marchers were peaceful—until the very end. At approximately 7:56 p.m., two security personnel, dubbed "peacekeepers," saw a man behaving suspiciously and appearing to have an AR-15-style rifle. As they confronted him, according to information released by the Salt Lake City Police Department, the gunman ran toward the crowd, "holding the weapon in the firing position." That's when one of the peacekeepers opened fire, striking the gunman and killing Afa Ah Loo, an innocent bystander. RadioACTive wants to pass the microphone so the community can talk about it. Guests:
Benjamin Powell and Analei Samasei’a of Creative Pacific Foundation, which will honor Afa's memory when it presents Creative Pacific Week 2025
The Right Reverend Phyllis Spiegel, Bishop of St. Mark's Episcopal, SLC, which rang its bells and opened the church's doors to fleeing crowds seeking safety
Rep. Grant Miller (D-Dist. 24), who was playing in a brass band in front of the Federal Building on Saturday night
Reporter Enrique Limón of The Independent
From GoFundMe for Afa's wife and children:
On June 14th, our sweet friend Laura lost her beloved husband Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, known to many as Afa. He was tragically killed during the No Kings protest in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Afa was a proud Samoan, deeply connected to his culture and community. Through his work with the nonprofit Creative Pacific and his incredible talent as a fashion designer, he shared his heritage with passion and creativity. But more than anything, Afa was proud of the life he built with his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children, Vera and Isaac.
From SLCPD: "The Salt Lake City Police Department continues to ask for community members to help with this investigation. We are asking for anyone with photos or video of the moments leading up to, during, and immediately after the shooting to upload those videos to https://saltlakecitypd.evidence.com/axon/community-request/public/june14shooting."
NOTE: During the show, plans for a 7 PM vigil for Afa at the Federal Building were announced.
