Plug Into Your Community with Tonight's Guests, Organizations & Community Events

Rallies & Resources Spotlight (full list here):

  • Out of the Blue, aka the 9th & 9th Whale, is ready for a glow-up. Renato Olmedo-González and Amy Childress of the SLC Arts Council tells us What's Next for the Whale.

    • Out of the Blue — affectionately known as “The Whale” — is Stephen Kesler’s iconic sculpture, located at the roundabout in the heart of Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhood. It will receive a new mural next summer! The current mural, Point of Reference by Mike Murdock, has transformed the sculpture into a strong symbol of community, creativity, resilience, and harmony.

    • Out of the Blue is a public artwork by Salt Lakers, for Salt Lakers. To reflect the neighborhood’s vibrant and ever-changing spirit, a new mural will be commissioned every 3–5 years.

    • Survey Says: What does “The Whale” mean to you? What makes 9th and 9th unique? What is Out of the Blue about Salt Lake City? Your insights will help shape the artist selection process and inspire the next mural. To take the survey, visit slc.gov/whalemural
