RadioACTive's Punk Rock Farmer Friday gets a preview of NHMU's BUGfest 2024 with 'The Bug Lady.' Homegrown music from Whisperhawk and Stella Standingbear. Plus, Rock Camp SLC, Westside Culturefest, and more.

Tonight's Punk Rock Farmer Friday edition of RadioACTive features the following people, organizations and/or events. Check them out and get plugged into your community!

Denise Devynck of Utah Valley Permaculture Classroom Gardens & Greenhouse, 11a-4p at 851 E. Highcountry Dr., Orem. which teaches permaculture techniques and all about edible food forests where Nature is teaching the next generation sustainable methods of growing food and living.

  • Aug. 10: 10th Annual Tour & Taste Open House Food Forest, 11a-4p at 851 E. Highcountry Dr., Orem. Event by Utah Valley Permaculture Classroom Gardens & Greenhouse: "Tour of a Self Sustainable Food Forest Award Winning Garden of Eden all designed conserving water, using Rainwater harvesting to Swales on Contour Designed, Food Forest Layers that cool temps 20 degrees layered guilds of a Forest of Drought Resistant, self-fertilizing, Living Soil system of healthy microbes, all balanced Insects, birds, mammals, and living ecosystem, no diseases, no pests problems, all natural no chemical, little work and just comes back stronger every Spring Garden. Homegrown music from Whisperhawk, who's been making music since the early 2000s. He released Kosmos Burger in June, and he will release Flags West in October. RadioACTive shares a couple of songs from each and talks with Michael Gross, aka Whisperhawk.

Shell Yeah of Rock Camp SLC, a nonprofit that empowers girls, transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth from all backgrounds through music education, collaboration, and performance.

  • Aug. 3: Rock Camp SLC Showcase at Commonwealth Room, 211 W. 2100 S., SLC. Doors at 1:00 p.m., show at 2:00 p.m. "ALL AGES ARE WELCOME TO ROCK OUT! Come see what happens when 60+ campers (ages 8-17) come together and form 10+ bands in 5 days, then perform their original songs in one of Salt Lake's best music venues! $5 suggested donation for entry. If you can't make the show, please spread the word about this event! Or donate at rockcampslc.org/donate. Let's show these brave campers their community loves and supports them and their hard work.   • Aug. 6-8: Rock Camp Gear Drive and Sale, 8a-4p at East Hollywood High, 2185 S. 3600 W., SLC. "Rock Camp SLC is celebrating their escape from storage units to having a more permanent space inside their favorite local media arts charter school on the West side, East Hollywood High School. We are looking forward to letting go of what no longer serves us, which means RAD gear! We also are encouraging folks to drop off their loved gear they no longer need, to contribute to our gear sale. All funds raised help pay for kids to come to camp. We are big believers in accessibility and will have a large amount of inventory that is 'Pay What You Can'. Amps, instruments, and merch will be available August 6th, 7th, and 8th from 2-4pm. East Hollywood staff will be on-site and giving tours upon request. Westside Culturefest is coming up next weekend. RadioACTive gets a sneak peek with Derek Dyer of the Utah Arts Alliance, Cami Munk of Salt Lake County Arts & Culture, and Stella Standingbear, a local Indigenous musician who's the Westside headliner.

  • Aug. 9-10: Westside CultureFest: A Block-Party Celebration of Arts and Community Diversity, 5:00-10:00 p.m. both days at Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center, 2525 Taylorsville Blvd., Taylorsville. "A two-day block party celebration of arts and community diversity. Featuring over 25 performances on-stage and outdoors, an artist market featuring local artists and craftspeople, food trucks, a bar area for adults, art activities for kids, a lowriders exhibit and hop-off, and incredible experiences for all ages. Punk Rock Farmer Friday Fieldtrip: Lara Jones heads to the Natural History Museum of Utah to explore the invertebrates collection with Christy Bills, aka The Bug Lady. The museum's annual BUGfest is coming up and we've got tickets to giveaway tonight.  

  • Aug. 10-11: , 301 S. Wakara Way, SLC. "For one weekend a year, BUGfest brings together invertebrate experts, educators, and enthusiasts for a celebration packed with fun programming, collections showcases, live insect interactions, informative lectures, and even a BUGbar.
