Kamaile Tripp-Harris and J.R. Hardman of PBS Utah. The duo is working on a documentary about Iosepa, once home to hundreds of Polynesian members of the LDS Church. Look for it on This Is Utah in the spring.

  • Aug. 5: Reenactress at Fort Douglas, 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Fort Douglas Military Museum. Event by Reenactress DocumentaryFort Douglas Military Museum and J.R. Hardman: "Join fellow fans of the Reenactress documentary at Fort Douglas Military Museum in Salt Lake City, UT for a special event! We'll present a behind-the-scenes sneak-preview with our brand new trailer, rough cut clips from the film, and a Q&A session with Reenactress director, J.R. Hardman. Admission is FREE and open to the public. However, a $25 suggested donation toward the completion of the film can be made at: www.reenactress.com/donate. Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the Fort Douglas Military Museum, which is open on Saturdays from 12pm (noon) until 5:00pm. Reenactress is a feature-length documentary about the gender-bending women of American Civil War reenactment and the historical women soldiers they fight to commemorate."

Chambers Ave., Millcreek. Event by Millcreek Common and Pacific Island Knowledge 2 Action Resources: "In celebration of Utah Pacific Islander Heritage Month come play at Millcreek Common! Islander food trucks, live music and cultural performances and roller skating. Admission is FREE and skate rentals are only $5."

  • 8/5: 11th Annual Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month Kick-Off, 5:00-10:00 p.m. at Lodestone Park, 6252 W. 6200 S., Kearns. Event by Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month: "This annual event officially kicks off August as Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month, which has been formally recognized since 2012. This event is organized and hosted by  (PIK2AR) and offers the opportunity for Pacific Islanders and the wider community to come together for an evening of culture and community with live music, dance, art, education, sports, crafts, food, shopping, youth activities, resources, and so much more! We'll have free backpacks with school supplies for all of our youth who complete a cultural passport exploring and educating on the different Pacific Islands. Following our event, you have prime seating for Kearns 21st Fire Water and Ice Festival's fireworks show! You'll be able to see the amazing display happening at Kearns Oquirrh Park all the way from Lodestone! Catch the show without having to deal with the traffic!"

    • 8/9: Tongan History Workshop, with Professor Doctor Kai’ili @ International Peace Gardens, 1160 S. Dalton Ave., SLC, @ 5-7pm (also streamed live on FB via Talakoula 90.9FM KRCL). "The workshop is open to all interested people, regardless of their background or knowledge of Tongan culture. It is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of land to Tongans and how we can all work together to protect and sustain it. Please join us to learn about the fonua collectively, and feel free to ask questions about any aspects of Tongan culture."

    • 8/10-12: 26th Annual Friendly Islands Tongan Festival @ Jordan Park, 1060 S. 900 W., SLC. Presented by the NTAS (National Tongan American Society): "The 26th annual Friendly Islands Tongan Festival is one of the longest-running festivals to celebrate Tongan culture and heritage in the United States. The festival showcases the food, arts, crafts, and entertainment from Tonga and our Pacific Island community in Utah. Come join us for three days of cultural performances, entertainment, sports events, delicious food, and shop in our marketplace for crafts, jewelry, clothing, and more." Free and open to the public."
