DC's US Representative Oye Owolewa is heading to Salt Lake City on Feb 21st following Senator Mike Lee's introduction of the anti-democratic BOWSER Act to eliminate the district's mayor and council. Plus, Curly Me! turns 10, lawmakers look to gut GRAMA, Utah challenges Every Kid Outdoors.

DC's US Representative Oye Owolewa is heading to Salt Lake City on Feb 21st following Senator Mike Lee's introduction of the BOWSER Act. If passed, this legislation would eliminate DC's mayor and council, leaving residents with no local representation. 

Earlier today, state lawmakers debated a bill that would gut GRAMA, Utah Government Records & Access Management Act. RadioACTive gets a legislative update from McKenzie Romero of Utah News Dispatch. The GRAMA bills to watch:

Ashley Brown of Utah's Every Kid Outdoors Adventure Challenge, which helps youths and their families and friends find fun, creative activities along the Wasatch Front. 

  • The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation is excited to introduce the Outdoor Adventure Challenge in 2025, a program designed to engage school-age youth (ages 5-18) in fun, seasonal outdoor activities. While the challenges are primarily aimed at youth in grades 4-6, the program is open to all school-age children and their families. Each month, participants will be invited to take on new challenges that promote outdoor recreation, nature exploration, and skill-building, all while fostering a lifelong love for the outdoors.

Curly Me! is about to turn 10, a milestone for a nonprofit that started out doing hair events and has grown into a mentorship and advocate for the 5-14 become so much more. RadioACTive talks with Founder and Executive Director Alyssha Dairsow about the variety of programs she now offers and the challenges still faced today by women of color.

  • Loc’d In is an elevated step to our BRAID’d program. Once a girl turns 14 years old and enters high school, we want to make sure they know they are the leaders of their own path. Through monthly meetings, a group project, mental health support, job/education readiness, and more, we will help girls get ‘Loc’d In’ to life.

  • Curly Me! Book Club is a summer book club where Black curly tweens get a chance to read books by authors that look like them with characters that look like them led by a youth leader and Dr. that create and hold space for them.

  • BRAID’d, which stands for Being Real and Incredibly Determined, is a monthly program that helps Black tweens (11-14 years old) form sisterhoods, discover their identity, and increase their confidence. These monthly meetings are complemented by women in the community who mentor them throughout the year. Topics we cover are financial literacy, girlhood, civic engagement, etc.

  • Natural In Nature is a monthly program in partnership with The Westside Collaborative and Outdoor Afro. This program is an opportunity for our Black tween girls to get outside. Outdoor experiences will include things such as hiking, kayaking, nature journaling, and so much more!
