White Claw returned to Sundance as a sponsor this year, setting up a pop-up club located just off of Main Street on Park Avenue. The White Claw Shore Club was open to the public, allowing anyone 21 and over the opportunity to stop in, purchase a drink for $3 and enjoy charcuterie-style snacks along with mini veggie and drip trays. But the best part about the club this year? Brittany Howard.
Howard performed on Friday, January 19 to celebrate the February release of her second solo album, "What Now."
Did I get to see her perform? No. Despite my borderline stalker-like attempts to confirm Howard's performance time with the White Claw publicist, I didn't hear back. When I stopped in on Friday night, I learned that I had missed her performance by about two hours. It's fine, I tried to tell my broken heart, I was on the red carpet for "The American Society of Magical Negroes." Sure, I didn't get to ask any questions. But I was there, right?
Things took a turn for the better, however, when I discovered that Howard would be returning to DJ a 45-minute set. I had no idea what to expect. But I wasn't going to miss it.
Howard didn't disappoint. In fact, she might have been one of the most engaging DJs I have ever witnessed—and trust me, I have seen a lot of DJs in my day.
She mixed classics throughout her set (some faves included Prince, Missy Elliot, DJ Kool), each one she was just as excited about as everyone else. She danced, sang along with the crowd, showed off her eclectic taste in music — and previewed an unreleased song from "What Now."
I missed the vocal performance, yes. But if Brittany Howard decides to take her DJ skills to the road, you better believe I'll be making my way to the dance floor.
In the meantime, Howard has announced her tour dates. SLC isn't on the schedule, but I'm hoping we somehow get added to the tour.
Hey, a girl can dream, right?
