Mike Tuiasoa and Cori Christine, owners of Watchtower Cafe, the first and only comic book coffee shop in Utah. Nan Rides for Fulbright: RadioACTive checked in with Nan McEntire, 72, who is on a coast-to-coast bicycle trek to raise money for the Utah Chapter of the Fulbright Association. 

  • Nan is riding with CrossRoads Cycling, an organization that gives participants the option of raising money for non-profit causes of their choice. Her cycling team embarked from Los Angeles on May 11, and plans to finish their long journey on June 29, when they ride into Boston. They'll pass through 15 different states, covering an average of 90 miles per day. To support Nan, click here.

Alison Einerson of Urban Food Connections of Utah, which produces the Downtown SLC Farmers Market. Located at Pioneer Park, 300 S. 300 W., SLC, the market opens at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 8. Tune in next week to meet some of the growers who will be selling their produce at the market.

Summit Land Conservancy's Julia McCarrier Edwards on Hops Hunters Hikes, the first of which is this Saturday along hillsides protected by the Conservancy. Join them to find wild-growing hop binds, descendants of plants originally brought over by German miners, and discussing local history, and native and invasive plants along the way. Hikes will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will last around two hours. Participants should wear hiking shoes and sunscreen. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash and friendly! Make sure to bring a snack and plenty of water.

  • June 2: Empire Canyon (meet at the gate at the top of Daly Ave)
  • June 16: McPolin Farmlands (meet at the White Barn, parking lot is across route 224 from the White Barn)
  • July 7: Virginia Mining Claims (meet at the Ontario Drain Parking area, .6 miles uphill of the round-about in Old Town on the left)
  • July 21: Rail Trail (meet at Prospector Park)
  • August 12: Prospector Ridge (meet at the Ontario Drain Parking area, .6 miles uphill of the round-about in Old Town on the left)

Click here to sign up for the hikes, which cap out at 40 hikers. By early fall, the Conservancy hopes to harvest the hops with the public's help. Once the hops are harvested, a limited-edition open space beer will be brewed and sold through Wasatch Brewery and featured at the Conservancy's annual Hoppy Hour event. A portion of the profits from the truly local brew will be given to the Conservancy to protect additional open spaces in Summit County.
