The Uncomfortable Truth's Civil Rights Movement Series, featuring Joanne Blackmon Bland and Dave Dennis

RadioACTive is celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy this week by presenting select episodes of The Uncomfortable Truth Podcast's Civil Rights Movement Series. Tonight: Joanne Blackmon Bland and Dave Dennis.

Arrested 13 times by her eleventh birthday, JoAnne was no stranger to the horrors of Jim Crow. Her mother died in childbirth because there was no "black" blood at the hospital. She wanted freedom and she wasn't going to wait. Only 11 years old on Bloody Sunday, JoAnne faced the charging horses and the swinging batons of the state troopers.

Freedom Rider Dave Dennis never thought about getting involved in the Civil Rights Movement but he did want a date with a pretty young lady. He was supposed to be killed along with the other activists during Freedom Summer but fate changed his own course in history. The pain remains even after his searing eulogy for James Chaney.
