Rising journalists once again took over RadioACTive for #VoicesAmplified, a collaboration between Salt Lake Community College, Amplify Utah and KRCL. Tonight, in anticipation of Earth Day this coming Friday, we explore the Great Salt Lake Collaborative – a solutions journalism project being tackled by nearly two dozen local news organizations and community and educational partners. The goal of the collaboration is to share multimedia stories about the Great Salt Lake and find ways to protect it. Plus, Utah poet Ashley Finley.

Tonight's show featured the following people and organizations. Check them out and get plugged into your community!

Rising journalists once again took over RadioACTive for a Voices Amplified edition of the show, a collaboration between Salt Lake Community College, Amplify Utah and KRCL. Diversity, stories that matter, the things you care about — amplified. Listen to them every Monday night at 6 p.m. through the spring semester at SLCC.

  • SIGN-UP: To find out how you can get in on this class next time, contact Marcie Young Cancio, assistant professor at Salt Lake Community College and Amplify Utah executive director. Email: marcie@amplifyutah.org.

Host Zay Angel Alvarez first spoke with poet Ashley Finley, a California native who lives in Salt Lake City. Ashley is a poet, activist, and educator whose passions lie in the liberation of all colonized and oppressed people and in the facilitating of a return to sacred, ancestral knowledge that bloomed before colonization and capitalism. As an introduction to a discussion about the natural world, Ashley shared a poem.

Zay then engaged in a conversation about the Great Salt Lake (GSL) Collaborative – a solutions journalism project consisting of Utah news, education and media organizations that are banding together to not only report on the problems but also on potential answers to a shrinking lake. Guests included:

  • Heather May, project manager of the GSL Collaborative

  • Jaimi Butler, coordinator of the Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College and member of the GSL Collaborative

  • McCaulee Blackburn, a SLCC student who will be working as an intern for the GSL Collaborative this summer

  • Amy Maestas, region collaborative manager for Solutions Journalism Network – the group sponsoring the GSL Collaborative

A website for the GSL Collaborative is still in the works. For more information about the group, view the following resources:

Zay closed with #PopCultureNuggets, a segment where the show’s team talks about what they’re watching, listening to, or activities coming up that they’re excited about.

  • Lead Producer Alexie Zollinger gave a shout-out to “X,” an American slasher film released in March, and shared her top slasher film icons

  • Associate Producer Amie Schaeffer discussed the controversies surrounding the film “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which include Harry Potter creator J. K. Rowling and, more recently, actor Ezra Miller

  • Booker Cristian Martinez gave an update on the unfolding third season of FX series “Atlanta,” mentioning the – thus far – somewhat-anthological nature of the newest season

  • Zay covered the mini-series “Moon Knight,” the latest Marvel Entertainment property from Disney’s streaming service and added "Atención" by salvathepeople to the #VoicesAmplified playlist
