KRCL is jumping in to 2024 with a strong commitment and reenergized focus on highlighting more local voices and stories with our updated program schedule.
As of January 1, KRCL will no longer air the nationally-syndicated program ‘Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman.’
KRCL’s 8pm weeknight music shows will now start an hour earlier, at 7pm, extending them to 3-hour shows, curated entirely by local volunteer DJs. Our weeknight 10:30pm shows will also move up, now starting at 10pm and ending at midnight, opening new time slots overnight for more local programming.
KRCL was one of the early community radio stations to broadcast Democracy Now! when it started in the late 90s. KRCL is proud of helping Democracy Now! broaden its reach to the residents of the Wasatch Front.
Democracy Now! fans will still be able to access the program through the Democracy Now! website www.democracynow.org, and the locally televised broadcast on UEN-TV ch.9.3, weeknights at 7pm. Listeners can also click here to sign up for the Democracy Now! daily news digest newsletter delivered directly to their inbox every morning, or click here to make a Year End donation to Democracy Now!
“Our longterm goal is to be 100% all-local programming and voices here at KRCL,” says Program Director Ebay Hamilton. “And we’re almost there. This change gets us one step closer to being fully live and local.”
KRCL is committed to amplifying underserved and diverse voices in our community. Our locally-produced, public affairs program, RadioActive, under the helm of executive producer Lara Jones with a team of community co-hosts, will continue to pass the mic to grassroots activists, community builders, punk rock farmers and DIY creatives, weeknights at 6pm.
KRCL was founded in 1979 as an alternative media outlet funded and powered by listener support. Now entering its 45th year, KRCL’s mission is to champion a more socially engaged Utah through locally-driven programming that promotes music discovery and civic participation.
KRCL listeners can find the new schedule below or at www.krcl.org/shows and listen at 90.9fm, www.krcl.org and on demand from the KRCL app.
New Schedule FAQ
Why did KRCL make this decision?
Our number one reason for making this decision is that KRCL has long held the goal of becoming 100% All-Locally produced programming. While we will still occasionally air featured programming created by partners like the Rocky Mountain Community Radio coalition (which KRCL is a member station of), we plan to no longer carry any ongoing, regularly syndicated programming like Democracy Now.
For several years, KRCL has been airing Democracy Now 13-hours later than the shows New York broadcast time, often causing the news to be extremely late and no longer relevant to our listeners.
Most KRCL listeners do not tune in to 90.9fm to listen to the show. In recent surveys conducted by KRCL, listeners continue to tell us that they do not turn to KRCL for national or international news. We will continue to share local perspectives on news and issues that effect all of us through our locally produced, community affairs programming.
Can I still listen to Democracy Now?
Democracy Now! can still be streamed On-Demand from their website at www.democracynow.org and their taped for television broadcast can be viewed locally on UEN-TV channel 9.3 at 7pm (the same time that KRCL aired the audio of the show.)
We also encourage fans of the show to consider donating directly to Democracy Now here as well as signing up for the their daily digest newsletter here.
Why did KRCL make this decision now?
When KRCL first started airing Democracy Now in the late 90's there were no other ways that you could hear the show in Utah. With the rise of streaming and On-Demand listening, as well as the televised broadcast becoming available on UEN-TV channel 9.3 is seemed like the right time to make room on our schedule for more local voices and programming.
What other changes are happening with the KRCL programming schedule beginning Jan 1, 2024?
With the removal of the nationally syndicated program Democracy Now from our weeknight schedule, it has allowed us to move up the 8pm music shows start times to 7pm, and also give them an additional 30mins of programming to curate. The 10:30pm shows will move up to 10pm, creating new Midnight-2am time slots that are also much more appealing to potential overnight volunteer DJs.
Other changes:
Connor Estes of Late Night Lowdown has stepped away from his Tuesday night, 8pm show, to focus on his staff role with RadioActive and other production responsibilities at KRCL.
Gavin Dahl will be moving into the 7pm Tuesday night time slot with a new show called Bubbling Up, that focuses on New Music.
Chovy has moved his Tuesday, 10:30pm Super Sounds show to Saturday nights at Midnight
KRCL's Jazz program, Night Light, will be moving into the old Super Sounds time slot, and can now be heard Tuesday nights, 10pm-Midnight.
