Gavin here, KRCL’s new station manager, writing to you all from my new desk at the station. I arrived in Salt Lake City from Colorado on Friday night and then had such an action-packed weekend, my new colleagues suggested I send along a note with some photos for all of you to see how much I’ve already discovered about this great city.
Saturday morning I tuned in to our live remote broadcast from the Downtown Farmers Market and then headed to Pioneer Park to shop for fresh produce myself. I had a chance to hop on the microphone with John Florence in the KRCL booth, and also chat off-air with Alison Einerson, the executive director of Urban Food Connections of Utah.
Saturday afternoon I headed to the Utah Beer Festival at The Gateway, then down to Sandy for Real Salt Lake soccer against Vancouver. The match ended in a tie. What a gorgeous stadium!
On Sunday morning, our engineer Bill Ramsay let me ride along to our transmitter site at Farnsworth Peak where he did some work on our equipment. I was lucky enough to witness beautiful views including the Great Salt Lake and downtown Salt Lake City. Unforgettable. (Top Photo: Bill harnessed and hard at work)
Sunday afternoon I returned to the Utah Beer Festival, since a friendly stranger gifted me extra tickets the day before. I’m primarily a fan of bottom-fermented beers like lager and pilsner, sorry to offend the hop heads. Here are my top 10 favorite Utah beers from the event:
10. Ogden River Brewing - Vienna Lager
9. Heber Valley Brewing - Cold Fusion Kolsch
8. Epic Brewing - Munich Mayhem Marzen Lager
7. Fisher Beer - Fisher Beer Pilsner
6. Silver Reef Brewing - Schwarzbier
5. Strap Tank Brewing - Moto Guzzi Italian Pilsner
4. Proper Brewing - Unicorn Fight Dungeon Cranberry Lime Lager
3. Grid City Beer Works - Honey Cream Ale
2. SaltFire - Los Braceros Mexican Lager
1. Templin Family Brewing - Big Smoke Rauchbier
Sunday night, thanks to local promoter Brett High of Honeypot Concerts, I was one of about 60 lucky individuals who saw two underground hip hop legends at a free show here in SLC. Beatmaker and rapper Deca and underrated lyricist Homeboy Sandman are on tour with DJ and producer Felix Fast4ward. I was also really impressed with local openers Earthworm & Clesh. The crowd at Liquid Joe’s was in good spirits and I was grateful for a cheap Lyft ride home at the end of a long weekend! Here’s Homeboy Sandman, up close and personal.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the next chapter in KRCL’s evolution. And I also want to thank everyone at the station who got my new office set up in time for my first day on site Monday. Our daughter starts preschool here next week. It’s all happening fast. Mark your calendar for KRCL’s 909 Day Block Party and Record Sale on Friday September 9 here at the station! I’m looking forward to connecting with you and meeting KRCL’s friends and donors. Hope to see you there.
